Description
The J21 was a Swedish built single-seat, single-engine attack plane that later became one of the first-generation jet fighters. Its design is a twin-boom tail epusher configuration. It had two longitudinal booms, attached to the main wing but extending backwards from the middle section of each wing, with the main fuselage placed in the middle in a configuration similar to the Lockheed P-38. As result of the power provided by this engine and the aerodynamic characteristics, the J 21 was said to have excellent handling, benign stall characteristics and tight turning circle. The armament also gave this fighter good firepower, with Swedish pilots comparing it with the Mustang P 51D.
The piston-propelled version, the J 21 had its engine, a licensed Daimler-Benz DB 605B, simply fitted at the rear of the fuselage in a pusher configuration, behind the cockpit and between the longitudinal booms. The J 21 could develop speeds up to 645 km/h (400 mph).
A 21A-3 21364 circa 1947 was an attack version, equipped with wingtip fuel tanks, a bomb sight and provision to carry rockets and bombs.
