Description
Once you come across a Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), there is no doubt about what you have seen. They are so unmistakable and so wonderful that recognition is instantaneous. This male was photographed in its natural element at Hobe Sound National Wildlife Preserve in Hobe Sound, Florida.
Did you know that:
- The Cardinal is the state bird of seven states! (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia)
- The female cardinals is one of the few female songbirds that sings.
- During mating season, if a cardinals sees itself in a mirror or window, it will fight itself for weeks
- It does not lose its color when it molts
