Description
When we hear the expression "that time of year again" our thoughts usually go to either the holidays or tax season. But there's another time of year that comes around just as regularly: summer and the return of all our tiny six-legged friends, the bugs.
In some cases, like mine, it's a source of itchy bites, big red welts and the smell of bug spray (bitey-bugs love me). But overlooking all that, every year at this time I get a little excited to see my first good-sized butterfly of the year. Of course, they're all my favorites. But the monarch does hold a special place in my heart due to its impressive life cycle. Each year these tiny creatures migrate from the Northern and Central US and Canada to Florida and Mexico. They cover thousands of miles, with a corresponding many-generation return north.
The image shown here, based on a photo I took several years ago, was maybe the first time I saw a monarch and actually recognized it as such. I was on a bird-walk and probably annoyed the heck out of the people I was with (who weren't taking pictures ... just "looking" ... imagine that!) by stopping to ooh and ahh over a butterfly. I spied him way off the beaten track and had to quietly navigate many weedy brambles and bushy things ... loaded with ticks, if I remember correctly. Regardless, I got the shot ... and subsequently after all these years ... the artwork.

Fine art purchases of this image will not include a watermark, and if I may make a recommendation ... this image will look its very best on the fine art paper choice of "picture rag."
